Elastic Vol. 1 - DJs Sveta and Jayse Knipe. Hyperiondance/Universal
First things first, excellent packaging. Nice foldout box, superb images, nice photos, excellent track listings, topnotch overall really.
Jayse Knipe joins Sydney DJ Sveta (Mardi Gras, Happy Valley, Chinese Laundry (Syd. - not Melbourne's Old Skool) etc.) for an upfront and ambitious release that really does help reinstate Australia's claim to becoming a recognisable force in dance music globally. These two could also most recently have been experienced mixing it up at Labour of Love on the long weekend just past, helping spread the word to the masses of this fine release.
DJ Sveta starts the ball rolling with a mix of tribal tech-house, hard house and sexy grooves on disc one with the most dynamic and easily most gripping track being one of her own productions - a collaboration with Tonemeister entitled "Phoenix" which is simply DYNAMITE. The mix develops with offerings from Silicone Soul - "Chic-O-Laa" (H-Foundation Mix) out on Scottish imprint Soma and Peace Division with "Into the Music" - nice, steady funky tech-house that commands you to succumb to its preaching. It is when the devilishly dangerous Wonderland Avenue Mix of "Musak" from Trisco leads into "Groove Society" that Sveta starts to up the ante. The aforementioned Phoenix simply explodes into the mix and starts to ask some questions I would be more than content to answer in the middle of the goddamn dancefloor - this really, really rocks. Hats off, Sydney Lass. Personally though, the rest of disc one fails to live up to the high established through Sveta's own effort although the inclusion of tracks from Klobber, Cliff Tangredi and the Thomas Schumacher mix of Pascal F.E.O.S "I can feel that" are sufficient to maintain interest if not energy output.
Melbourne's Jayse Knipe opts for a more tribal tech-attack on the senses with a brave and diverse mix that includes a dark and foreboding intro written by the man himself. He then tests the waters with Hellar and Farley's "Deep Sensation" (Peace Division Mix) and takes awhile to get going through Dubb Me Some'tin Fresh (groovy bassline under tribal chants and strong chords) and Samuel L Session's "Centrafrique".This track is full of South American flavour and is pounding and hypnotizing. As the mix continues we enter darker territory with the driving "Pegelfest" from Mono Meltdown and "Normalize" from Casey Hogan which leads into the smooth and familiar "Never Gonna Come Down" from BT.We are brought back down though, through the talents of Angel Alanis, Riley and Clay and the funky "Peptide Bass" from Drumscape.
Overall it is more than pleasing to see such an ambitious and well executed project generated from our own 'backyard' that stands out a country mile from the anthem-filled crap that is so often regurgitated from the overseas market.
Nice one! |

The Party Millennium
Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras (2000)
Compiled and mixed by DJs Luke Leal and Sveta.
Both CDs reflect the RHI and Hordern at their peak in time.
Sveta's representation was significant at the time as her selections reflected a move away from the commercial slant of previous years toward music that was deeper and more underground. |

Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras
2000 The Party Millennium
DJs Luke Leal and Sveta
Zomba Records
Described as a 2 hour DJ excursion, the Millennium CD takes you higher as it re-creates the atmosphere and experiences of the Royal Hall of Industries and Hordern Pavilion at Sydney's most famous dance party.
CD 1 is mixed by Luke Leal and reflects the mood of the RHI room. Luke sets the scene with a smooth cocktail of uplifting vocal house, disco beats and then moves on up to a selection of harder "bangin" house. Luke has included tracks by international supremo's, The Trouser Enthusiasts, Chicane, Billy Ray Martin & Goldust, Katch' and more giving CD 1 a mesmerising and uplifting feel. Luke has been a regular fixture on the Sydney club and party scene since 1995. Already a veteran of six Mardi Gras Parties and Sleaze Balls, Luke's versatility and mixes have won over many a dance floor. Luke has recently been moving into the area of production and has recently collaborated with Paul Goodyear to remix Tina Cousin's track 'Pray'. A busy man indeed.
Sveta Gilerman, who sets up the electro, tribal and hard house vibe of the Hordern, mixes CD 2. Recognised for her diverse range of musical styles, Sveta has handpicked and delivered a provocative mix of grooves and beats crossing into genres of hard sexy house, disco, trance, tribal, electro and breakbeat. CD2 includes tracks by, Hedonix, Bekkou. D-Fact, Raven Maize, Eisbauer and Sydney's own DJ Abel 'El Toro. Starting out as a radio disc jockey in 1990 and moving into the world of DJing by 1996, Sveta quickly left a lasting impression. Her DJing has taken her to great heights, playing at the best venues and most exciting parties to the most truly diverse queer crowds. Some of Sveta's highlights include playing at the Inquisition Leather Pride parties, Sleaze Ball 99, Mardi Gras Parties, 98 & 99.
THE PARTY MILLENNIUM CD, is a double celebration of 2000getherness and hope for the future. The atmosphere and style captures and documents the unique feel of contemporary dance music in Sydney.
